Undocumented Parents Trying to Reunite With Their Children May Face Deportation Under New Proposal

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) may soon be checking the immigration status of all potential sponsors of children who arrive unaccompanied at the U.S border, as well as any adult members of the potential sponsor’s household. The new proposal to expand screening likely will have a chilling effect on immigrant communities, leading to unaccompanied children languishing in shelters or foster care and ultimately preventing family reunification.

ACLU files class action against ICE, President Trump detainment policy

The ACLU of Massachusetts filed a class action lawsuit against President Trump and other administration officials on behalf of a Rhode Island resident and Guatemalan native, along with six similarly-situated plaintiffs, in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The lawsuit argues that ICE’s efforts to detain and remove the non-citizens in the suit violates the rights of all petitioners under the due process and equal protection guarantees of the US Constitution, the Immigration and Nationality Act and its regulations, and the Administrative Procedure Act.

But the Trump administration’s response to this humanitarian crisis has been unforgiving. In fact, the administration has recently made two policy announcements with the goal of further criminalizing immigrants apprehended crossing the border, as well as keeping them in immigration detention indefinitely.
